The rover spotted a shiny, dark rock unlike anything around it and after chemical analysis using its SuperCam and PIXL instruments scientists confirmed it is loaded with iron and nickel, classic signs of an iron meteorite that traveled millions of miles before crash-landing on Mars. The team nicknamed this mysterious visitor “Phippsaksla” after a striking peak in Norway and the images are absolutely stunning, the rock stands out like a black diamond on the rusty Martian surface. This is only the ninth confirmed meteorite ever found on Mars and the first iron-rich one spotted by Perseverance, making it an instant sensation among space enthusiasts. Experts say meteorites like Phippsaksla are time capsules from the early solar system and studying them on Mars avoids all the atmospheric burn-up that damages meteorites falling on Earth. Social media is exploding with memes calling it the “alien gift” that finally arrived after the rover waited patiently for years. NASA dropped the official images on November 19, 2025 and within hours #Phippsaksla was trending worldwide.
