<p>India has just achieved a historic milestone in medical science that can change millions of lives especially in tribal communities. Union Minister Dr Jitendra Singh today launched “Birsa 101” India’s first indigenously developed CRISPR-Cas9 gene therapy for Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) at CSIR-IGIB Delhi. This revolutionary treatment has been dedicated to the legendary tribal freedom fighter Bhagwan Birsa Munda on his 150th birth anniversary year. The therapy has been developed by CSIR-Institute of Genomics and Integrative Biology (IGIB) and the technology has been formally transferred to Serum Institute of India Private Limited (SIIPL) for large-scale affordable manufacturing. Dr Jitendra Singh announced that with Birsa 101 India has officially begun its decisive journey to become a Sickle Cell Disease-free nation by 2047 as envisioned by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. While gene therapies abroad cost â¹20-25 crore (up to $3 million) per patient this Indian innovation will cost only a fraction making it accessible even to the poorest tribal families in central and eastern India where SCD prevalence is highest. The minister described CRISPR technology as “precise genetic surgery” that permanently corrects the faulty gene responsible for sickle cell anemia. He praised Indian scientists for proving that world-class treatment can be developed at a fraction of global costs. A formal technology transfer agreement was signed between CSIR-IGIB and Serum Institute the same partnership that delivered Covishield and other life-saving vaccines during Covid-19. Dr Umesh Shaligram Executive Director of Serum Institute pledged full commitment saying “Globally gene therapy costs over $3 million even rich people can’t afford it. Our mission is to take Indian innovation to the poorest of the poor. We will make PM’s dream of Sickle Cell free India by 2047 a reality.” During the event Dr Jitendra Singh also inaugurated a new advanced research and translational facility at IGIB and stressed the need for “One Week One Theme” integrated national research model between CSIR DBT and industry. This breakthrough places India among global leaders in advanced genomic medicine and proves that from importing vaccines we have now become creators of next-generation therapies. The world will soon look to India for affordable cutting-edge healthcare solutions. </p>
